Improving customer flow through Dundas, St Andrew and St George stations
In November 2023, the TTC implemented a study to ease congestion and improve customer flow at Dundas, St Andrew and St George stations on Line 1 Yonge-University.
Ten tactics were temporarily installed including:
- Platform edge markings to reduce uncertainty by showing passengers where to wait for the next train.
- Coloured column wraps to brighten the platform and create a more inviting environment.
- “Keep Moving” floor decals to reinforce social norms related to stair/elevator/escalator usage and prevent blockages around landings.
- Fare Zone floor decals with explicit information on fare payment locations.
- Posters with messaging that fosters preferred behaviours to promote station flow.
- Escalator directional changes to match customer flow during peak travel periods.
- Retractable barriers to create a continuation of the staircase while agents provide directions to the platform.
- Stair signage reminding customers to keep right, reinforcing the social norm.
- Directional fare gates designating for exiting customers, while agents provide guidance.
- Audio messaging that fosters preferred behaviours to promote station flow.
Advanced video analytics and Artificial Intelligence (AI) were used to evaluate the impact of each. The three most successful tactics were:
- Platform edge markings
- “Keep Moving” floor decals
- Stair signage
To better manage future station capacity, the three successful tactics will be permanently installed in the coming months at Dundas, St Andrew and St George stations, along with nine additional priority stations:
- Finch
- Sheppard-Yonge
- York Mills
- Davisville
- Eglinton
- St Clair (monitoring only)
- Bloor-Yonge
- King
- Union
